The development of the GERNWEIT Hydrogen Bikes started in 2008. The latest generation of the GERNWEIT Hydrogen Bikes is developed on behalf of GERNWEIT by the Department of Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology of the University of Applied Sciences RheinMain, in cooperation with the Ralph Luh Engineering Co. and the Schunk Bahn- und Industrietechnik GmbH as fuel cell supplier (all Germany). This project receives financial support from the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Research of the German State of Northrhine-Westphalia.

Compared to batteries and internal combustion engines, fuel cell drive systems offer numerous advantages:

·         High range in excess of 100 km

·         Longer operating life than batteries

·         Different from batteries, no self-discharging

·         Long-term storability of hydrogen

·         Hydrogen cheaper than gasoline

·         Hydrogen safe to store and transport

·         Different from batteries, hydrogen tanks can be

           refilled within seconds

Same as the battery-powered GERNWEIT e-bikes, the GERNWEIT Hydrogen Bike is equipped with a 250W motor for pedal support up to a maximum speed of 25 km/h.

Hydrogen supply for the GERNWEIT Hydrogen Bikes occurs through exchange of the hydrogen tanks. Two separate tanks on the bike allow always to carry hydrogen, yet also to fully utilize the hydrogen stored. As a result, GERNWEIT Hydrogen Bikes do not depend on hydrogen gas stations.

The market introduction of the GERNWEIT Hydrogen Bikes is scheduled for 2014.
